Jair Bolsonaro arrested after being declared a flight risk

Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and given more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
